A cracked tooth is one of the most common forms of tooth pain toothache. As shown in the broken tooth model to the left, it is often caused by silver amalgam fillings in the teeth and the sharp edge that used to lock the filling into place. This edge is weakened, and it results in a cracked tooth. If the tooth cracks above the gun, it can be repaired with a ceramic dental crown. Otherwise, it might need a root canal treatment. When a dental crown is cemented onto the broken tooth to hold the pieces together, it behaves like a crash helmet and gives it strength.
